I would like to start volunteering, for a non-profit type organization, in or near my community. Where do find local volunteer opportunities? I’ve volunteered before, and would like to find a long term, teen geared volunteer opportunity, What do I need to start, and what safe web sites have information to link me with safe (!) volunteering opportunities? Also would I need a resume (sort of thing), and where could I find useful tips on writing a resume? Lastly, should I contact representatives for volunteering opportunities through email, or should I stick with phone contact?
Also I want to volunteer to be a good person, but could I qualify for any scholarships (I know its like a contest in these competitions) not for college but for a prep school (grade level, not higher education)?
I wondered about the resume because people on answers previously said you needed one, so I don’t need one?
In order to connect with the organization that best fits your needs and interests, I would suggest that you work through your local volunteer center. These groups can match you with the organization(s) that best fit your talents, donations, and time commitment/requirements.
The first thing I would recommend is to contact your local volunteer center. You can find them through the Hands On Network or the Points of Light Foundation:

As for the resume, it all depends upon the volunteer opportunity that you are seeking. I didn’t need a resume for any of the standard projects that I’ve been working on for the past couple of years (tutoring kids, working at the museum, working at the children’s shelter, etc.) The only time I needed a resume was right before I was accepted for a volunteer position as a board member on the Board of Directors for one of the local non-profits. There are many programs available to help you put together a resume. However, when applying for a non-profit board, it is always advisable to put all of your non-traditional items (ie, volunteer work, charitable time contributions, etc) in this version of your resume.
In many cases these days, the contact method doesn’t matter as much. Phone contact will probably be a little faster with most of the non-profits and volunteer centers.

I wanted to volunteer at a hospital, I’m 18, and on the application it asks me for previous associations, or programs I have been a part of. But this would be my first time volunteering.
Should I start volunteering somewhere simpler first, like a library? Or should I write "This would be my first time in a volunteer program." ?
Yes, it is to gain experience in that field of work.
Just let them know it’s your first time volunteering. Once you do begin your volunteer work someone will help you with your orientation to the hospital, the layout of the hospital and the duties expected of you. It’s a great thing to do for yourself and the community. I was a hospital volunteer many years ago as a teen and eventually went into nursing as a career. I loved it and still do. Good luck.
